Замок Bunratty, часть 2/ Bunratty Castle, part 2

Today I am going to continue showing you around the Bunratty castle. The castle is open from 9 am till 5.30pm, the tickets are 15euro per adult. Also kids and students can get discount and you can purchase family ticket.

You can read a bit about the history of the castle here

In 970 this site used to be a viking trading port. The first defensive fortress was built here in 1250, and the castle itself was built in 1425. It has been demolished and reconstructed a few times.

The castle itself stands on a high ground and the village lies beneath it, at one time the village and the castle were home to 1000 residents. The castle is absolutely magnificent and is rather dark. Some photos are pretty dark as you can't take photos with flash inside.

All the castle employees are dressed in costumes, inside the castle I'd say they are not wearing the orginal clothing, like the girl on the door. But further on into the village people are dressed in 1800 original clothing. The girl at the door greets everyone and adresses you as milady and lord, which was very unexpected and funny =))
As you go into the castle you big a big banquet hall, in the four corners there are towers into which you can go up by spiral staircases, which are unbelievably scary! If you followed the link and read about the history, you know that Lord and Lady Gort who have restored the castle, have spent 15 years travelling around the world to recollect what was stolen from the castle. The lady shaped lampshade was recovered from Germany and the bell turned up in Japan. This bell still works, it was used during the evening banquet that we went to later that day.

The ceilings in the castle are very tall, I didn't expect them to be SO tall. This was the main hall, where the soldiers and the castle servants used to have dinner. You see the throne at the bottom of the photo and the table in front of it? They are from the 15th centuary! It has kept very well and it's hard to believe that it's so ancient.
Look at how narrow ans steep the stairs are and I just can not imagine how soldiers walked up and down in them wearing their armour or women in puffy dressed and carrying a child. The stairs are designed in such a way that the soldiers who defended the castle were able to raise their weapons to hit, but whoever was attacking and coming up the stairs did not have enough room to raise their arm.
This room belonged to the captin of the watch. All beds in the castle are just stunning, just look at that headboard! The room is quiet small, I though it would have been bigger. It only fits a bed, chest, fire place and that's it really, you can also see the armour and weapons on the wall, the armour looks very small for a grown man. The ceiling is also decorated beautifully.
This is a second hall, it's on the second floor, there are no table only a fire place and different pieces of interior.
I was so impressed by this chest, they were a wedding gift to the bride from her parents. It's construction began at the same time the girl was born and as she was growing up and something was happening pictures were carved into it. So every element that's on it is her life story. The very last thing was carved into it on her wedding day, her husband's family crest was carved in the middle.
This is the other side of that hall.
This was the count's and countess's bedroom. The dress that's on the bed is stunning, it embroided with dark navy thread on beige and gold background. I have always wanted an ancient chest as a child and I loved the one in second photo and couldn't stop admiring it.

It's then followed by count's private quarters, maybe it was his office. The painting on the wall is that of Lord Gort who has reconstructed the castle. Although it's a lovely idea to acknowledge his work and contribution, the painting should have been made to look ancient and to paint him in the same era style. I think it looks a bit odd that he is wearing a suit and a tie in a 15th century castle.
